Mozambique: More than 22,000 IDPs have returned to their communities in Macomia district

The Mozambican Police (PRM) confirmed on Sunday the deaths of 11 people, victims of two road accidents that occurred in the previous 48 hours in the northern province of Nampula.
Meanwhile, according to a statement issued on Sunday by the Ministry of Transport, there were three more deaths resulting from a third accident, this time a railroad accident, in which a train hit a car on an unmanned level crossing. This brings to 14 the total number of deaths that occurred over the weekend.
“The collision between a train and a car occurred around 01h00, at the level crossing, near Rapale station, resulting in three deaths and major damage to the vehicle”, said the Ministry statement.
Dércio Samuel, head of the PRM Public Relations Office in Nampula, explained that in the accident that occurred on the South-North Highway (EN1), in the area of Netia, Monapo district, six deaths were registered and in the second accident that occurred in the district of Malema, on National Road Number 13 (EN13), there were five fatalities.
“These deaths were verified at the accident sites by our brigades. As for the accident on the railway, where a car crashed into a train, we are still collecting the data and we promise to release the information in the coming hours”, he said.
On Sunday morning, the head of the Emergency Department of Nampula Central Hospital, the largest health unit in northern Mozambique, reported the entry of 23 injured people, six of whom were hospitalized as a result of the above traffic accidents.
According to the Transport Ministry, staff from the National Road Transport Institute (INATRO), the Traffic Police (PT), the National Road Administration (ANE), and railway and health experts went to the places immediately to provide the necessary support to the victims and their families, as well as to collect data.
The Ministry urged all motorists to comply scrupulously with the rules of safe driving, adding that “the offenders will be hold accountable to avoid more blood on the roads.”
