Reservations at the tourist resorts in Bilene Beach Municipality are almost sold out, and managers say that, despite the economic crisis, there is a lot of demand for accommodation over the festive season.
Bilene, located 145 km north-east of the capital, Maputo, is one of the festive season’s favourite destinations – and this year will be no different.
Just two weeks before Christmas, and most hotel and other accommodation is already booked. At Humula Beach Resort, for example, there is a lot of demand, even for Christmas parties, which is not common, according to manager Hendrick Pott.
At the Bilene Hotel, all the chalets are booked out and only rooms are available, manager Nelson Busse says. A gala dinner, live music and fireworks are among the attractions lined up for the New Year’s Eve party.
But the opening of the Maputo-KaTembe Bridge presents Bilene with a strong competitor: the beaches of Ponta do Ouro, another tourist destination of choice. Still, Bilene managers say the resort is not threatened, given the particular features that its beach offers.
South Africa and Maputo provide most of the holiday-makers visiting Bilene Beach over the festive season.
