The Ministry of Culture issued the following note of condolence on the passing of Alberto Mucheca.
“The Ministry of Culture and Tourism has learned with deep sadness of the death of the musician and composer Alberto Mucheca on January 1, 2023.
The death of Alberto Mucheca leaves a huge void, taking into account his status as a father, friend and citizen, and his devotion to the cause of culture, social harmony and his homeland.
Alberto Mucheca was a creative man, an excellent popular troubadour and an exemplary figure. In life he knew how, with his instrument of choice, the guitar and his enchanting voice, to give the dynamics and energy that music needs.
Alberto Mucheca had an artistic career and a social life dedicated to the arts and culture, making them an instrument for promoting citizenship, self-esteem and coexistence between cultures and civilizations.
With his guitar, his songs and his imposing voice, Alberto Mucheca interpreted the rich and diverse musical traditions of our country in his ensemble. He knew how to interpret the emotions of his people, and he brought hope and dreams for an ever better Mozambique.
A maker of marrabenta from its roots, Alberto Mucheca used music to express his social joys and dissatisfactions, to urge society to change behaviours and to unite people.
During his career, the artist stood out, among several themes, with “Ulava Nikuyine”, “Mu Jhoni Jhoni” and “Aldeia 25 de Junho”.
Alberto Mucheca is an unavoidable reference in the Mozambican musical panorama, as he knew how to make music an instrument of identity and affirmation of Mozambicanity.
Mucheca’s death means the loss of one of the best artistic creators, leaving a void difficult to fill in our musical heritage. The Board of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism sends its deepest condolences to the bereaved family.
May his soul rest in peace!”
