The volume of containerized cargo entering the port of Beira, in Sofala, could grow by 34% by the end of this year, with the arrival of around 600 cargo ships.
Among the vessels that could dock at the port infrastructure are the PANAMAX, at over 300 metres in length among the largest container ships in the world.
The information was shared on Saturday (03-05) by Lino Nhacumba, the director of Maritime Services of the Mozambique Railway Company (CFM) in Sofala province.
Nhacumba said that the Port of Beira currently offers better safety conditions for docking ships with a draft of over 12 metres.
“Due to the nature of the Port of Beira, which is a river port, conditions are in place to assist these ships, as we have modern means that guarantee their assistance in our port. For example, in November 2024, we received a 300-metre container ship, which docked and undocked safely,” Nhacumba said.
The port of Beira is a strategic transit gateway for landlocked countries in the Southern African region, handling transit cargoes to and from Zimbabwe, Malawi, Zambia, Botswana, and the DRC
