The city of Beira has since Tuesday had four disinfection tunnels to help counter the coronavirus pandemic and mass-disinfect residents in public places.
Two of the four tunnels were installed at Beira Central Hospital, to disinfect residents and staff at the largest hospital unit in the central region, which hundreds of residents visit every day for medical assistance.
“We again express our gratitude. These tunnels will contribute a lot in the battle against Covid-19, mainly to avoid cross-infections here in the hospital, because as you know, this is a referral hospital unit in the central region and we have children and pregnant women hospitalised here. Therefore, it is important to prevent infections, mainly Covid-19, from entering ” hospital director Nelson Mucupa said.
The initiative comes from a group of entrepreneurs called SOS-corona, which works in different sectors in the fight against the spread of the new coronavirus.
“The SOS-corona group will continue to support government and municipal entities in the fight and prevention of COVID-19 to the full extent of its capabilities, so that we may first of all, prevent the coronavirus from reaching the city of Beira and, if it does, to prevent the community spread from being very large,” Gilberto Correia, one of the initiative’s organisers, said.
The third tunnel was set up in Beira’s Praça do Municipio, where the residents of Praia Nova, mostly fishermen, often circulate. Speaking at its inauguration, provincial director of health Priscila Filimone reiterated requests for all citizens to cooperate in the fight against Covid-19.
A fourth tunnel is due to be set up this week at the Hospital 24 de Julho, one of the designated Covid-19 facilities.
