The city of Beira has for about a month been facing an acute shortage of cement as a result of the closure of the largest cement factory in Sofala. This has triggered an increase in the price of a bag of cement, which now costs between 500 and 520 meticais, against the previous 475.
The suspension of production at the Beira cement factory, the largest in Sofala, has taken consumers by surprise, especially during this period of peak demand.
Cement retailers are now resorting to two factories in Dondo, about 30 km from Beira, but these are not able to meet demand, and some sellers have already increased their prices.
The government’s Industry and Commerce sector admits that the Beira factory has the largest production capacity and the most customers, but denies that there is any ‘cement crisis’ there.
