More than a hundred doctors marched through the streets of the city of Beira, central Mozambique, on Saturday in support of their national strike, now over a month long, accusing the government of insensitivity.
The march, escorted by the police of Beira, capital of Sofala province, passed off peacefully.
Along the way, doctors shouted “We are not only 60”, in reference to the threat by the Council of Ministers to hire 60 new doctors to replace the professionals on strike, if the stoppage continues.

“He [the Minister of Health, Armindo Tiago] has sensitivity for this cause, because it is not just ours, this cause is also his,” (because he is also a doctor) Leonel Andela, Medical Association of Mozambique (AMM) representative in Sofala province, told journalists.
Andela accused the Minister of Health of being disconnected from the feelings and claims of health professionals.
“For a functional National Health Service, it is necessary that health workers are well taken care of and satisfied with their working conditions,” he stressed.
The AMM delegate in Sofala province said that “there is no healthy communication” between doctors and the government, forcing health professionals to use other means of persuasion, such as the march on Saturday.
“We want users and civil society to join this cause, this fight, because this fight is not just for the medical profession,” he underlined.
Leonel Andela gave assurances that most of the medical staff working in health units in Sofala province were providing the minimum services required by law.
Mozambican doctors have been on strike since July 10 in protest at salary cuts resulting from the application of the new civil service salary table (TSU) and non-payment of overtime.
