Mozambique’s national beach soccer team is on the verge of qualifying for the semi-finals of the Beach Soccer African Cup of Nations, after adding a second consecutive victory at the event in Dakar, Senegal.
On Monday evening, the national team beat the Seychelles 7-3 and secured the leadership of group B, potentially guaranteeing a place in the semi-finals of the African competition.
Mozambique were unstoppable in the first period, ending 4-0 up, but relaxed in the following two periods, letting three goals in, but nothing that would scupper their final 7-3 victory, a second consecutive triumph.
This Tuesday, the national team ends the group phase with a match against Morocco, a favourite for the AFCON title, where a draw could guarantee Mozambique a place in the semi-finals.
Nelson Manuel, who leads the tournament scoring charts with eight goals in his first two games, produced another impressive performance to help Mozambique reach the knockout stages.
The Seychelles have lost their opening two matches and now cannot qualify for the last four.
That means the battle to secure a top two finish in the group is between Egypt, who face the Seychelles today and Morocco, who take on Mozambique today in the second of a double header of matches at the Saly Beach Soccer Stadium.
Depending on the results of those two matches, it could come down to a winner takes all contest between Egypt and Morocco on Wednesday (May 26).
Yesterday’s other game came in Group A with Uganda beating Tanzania 4-3 in an exciting contest thanks to a brace from Isma Kawakulo.
Uganda and tournament hosts Senegal have now both won one match in the group, albeit Uganda have played twice, while Tanzania have one defeat to their name.
Group A features just three teams following the withdrawal of the Democratic Republic of Congo, and after a rest day in the group tomorrow, Senegal face Tanzania on May 26.
The two teams that reach the final of this continental tournament will qualify to represent Africa at the 2021 FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup, which is scheduled to be held in Moscow, Russia, from August 19 to 29.
