The launch of the latest novel by Mozambican writer and poet Hélder Muteia, “O Código das Serpentes” [The Code of The Serpents], took place on Wednesday, May 14, in the auditorium of the BCI headquarters.
The ceremony brought together colleagues, friends, literature lovers, family members and other personalities, in a moment that intensely celebrated national literary production.
On the occasion, BCI’s Administrator, Luís Aguiar, welcomed the audience, highlighting BCI’s ongoing commitment to promoting culture and supporting Mozambican literature, stressing that, alongside initiatives in the areas of education, social inclusion, health, the environment and citizenship, culture occupies a central place in BCI’s social impact strategy.
“With this work, we want to consolidate our vocation: to be more than just a bank and to be recognised as an institution that raises the standard of satisfaction and self-esteem of Mozambicans, creating value,” he stated.
António Barros, who presented the work, highlighted the depth of the novel. “From the very first lines, the author sets out to stimulate readers, to accompany them on a dive into a distinct, paradigmatic and little explored world,” he said, emphasising that the interactions between the characters challenge the reader to confront their own horizons, beliefs and emotions.
The author, Hélder Muteia, praised BCI’s cultural vision and confessed that the work is the result of years of research into a profound reality, often ignored, but present in the collective subconscious. “All of us, without wanting to, know how to live with it,” he observed.
The ceremony also featured an emotional intervention by renowned Mozambican actress Lucrécia Paco, who gave voice and expression to excerpts from the work, transporting those present to the dense and symbolic universe of the novel.
