The importing of cattle, pigs, goats and sheep for rearing and slaughter from neighbouring Malawi, or their meat or meat by-products, is prohibited since yesterday, following the outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease in the Chikwawa district, reported on 13 June by the World Animal Health Organisation.
The ban, enacted by Mozambique’s National Directorate for Livestock Development, also prohibits the importing of livestock fodder.
A statement sent to Notícias indicates that the veterinary authorities will intensify, for the detection of possible cases of the disease, the inspection of the movement and transit of animals, products and by-products along the main borders and other points of entrances and highways, in addition to the monthly examination of districts bordering Malawi.
