Mozambique: Malnutrition among children under five dropped to 37% in 2013-23

Mozambique reported n Sunday another death due to coronavirus-related infection – a 17-day-old newborn girl, who suffered also from other congenital and respiratory diseases.
According to the Ministry of Health’s Sunday Covid-19 data update, the minor tested positive for coronavirus on the 4th of July, the day she died in Maputo, where she had been hospitalised with other comorbidities since 30th June.
The patient “was undergoing treatment for the comorbidities that led to her hospitalisation, and the death occurred at dawn on Saturday in the isolation room of the Central Hospital of Maputo,” the health authorities say.
The case brings to eight the number of those how have perished from Covid-19, and two others due to other causes.
MISAU also indicated that, over the weekend, a further 18 individuals had tested positive for Covid-19 from a batch of 627 samples tested in national laboratories in the public and private sector.
This brings Mozambique’s infected total to 987, with 905 locally transmitted and 82 imported.
In terms of the distribution of the newly diagnosed cases, MISAU lists seven as from the city of Maputo, six from Maputo province, one from Inhambane, two from Nampula and an equal number from Cabo Delgado.
“The new cases are all of Mozambican nationality and result from surveillance in Health Units. They are in isolation at home,” the MISAU press release reads, indicating that the process of mapping the respective contacts is currently underway.

MISAU also reported that another patient was hospitalised, in Inhambane. Mozambique now has six patients receiving hospital care.

“All hospitalised individuals have different chronic pathologies, associated with Covid-19,” the MISAU statement reads.
The majority of registered active cases continue to be in the north of the country, in the provinces of Nampula (284) and Cabo Delgado (156), followed by Maputo city (87) and Maputo province (75).
The remaining seven provinces have fewer than 20 registered cases.
Health authorities report having 14 more individuals recovering from the disease over the weekend, three in Niassa province, the same number in Cabo Delgado, four in Inhambane and the others in Maputo province. These bring the country’s tally of fully recovered to 270.
Mozambique thus had, by Sunday (July 5) a cumulative total of 987 people who had tested positive for the new coronavirus, of whom 270 were reported to have recovered, eight had lost their lives due to Covid-19, and two to other causes.
