The average level of prices in Mozambique declined slightly in June, according to the latest figures from the National Statistics Institute (INE).
Nationally, prices fell by 0.07 per cent in June. This was partly due to a fall in fuel prices. During the month, the average price of diesel fell by 3.1 per cent, and of petrol by one per cent. Other goods with significant price declines included cabbage (9.3 per cent), lettuce (9.2 per cent), tomatoes (seven per cent), coconuts (6.6 per cent) and butter beans (3.3 per cent).
But several goods went in the other direction and displayed price rises. These included bread (up by 2.8 per cent), fresh fish (1.2 per cent), dried fish (1.2 per cent), and live chickens (1.5 per cent).
June was the first month of deflation this year. The accumulated inflation, from January to June, was 1.2 per cent.
So far, 2025 is following the normal pattern for seasonal prices in Mozambique – a slow rise in inflation in the first months of the year, followed by deflation in the middle of the year, as the main harvests are brought in. Judging by past experience, prices will start rising again, in the period immediately prior to the festive season (October/November).
The yearly inflation rate in June was 4.15 per cent (from 1 July 2024 to 30 June 2025). The annual rate was four per cent in May, 3.99 per cent in April, and 4.77 per cent in April. The last time the annual inflation rate was over ten per cent, was in March 2023, when it hit 10.02 per cent.
The Mozambican city with the highest rate of inflation in June was Xai-Xai (0.55 per cent), followed by Tete (0.18 per cent). In all other cities prices declined slightly over the month.
