Mozambican authorities warned yesterday of the possibility of “moderate urban flooding” in the cities of Beira and Dondo, Sofala province, as a result of the bad weather forecast for the centre of the country over the next few days.
According to a note from the National Directorate for Water Resources Management, the two cities may experience moderate flooding in the next 48 hours, but without major risk to communities.
“The hydrographic basins of the Búzi and Púngué rivers may register an increase in the volume of runoff, without significant impacts for the communities. There is also a moderate risk of erosion for the cities of Chimoio and the town of Gondola [in the province of Manica],” the note reads.
“The National Directorate for Water Resources Management calls on society in general to observe precautionary measures,” it adds.
In March 2019, central Mozambique was hit by Cyclone Idai, which caused 604 deaths and affected more than 1.8 million people. The city of Beira, one of the country’s largest, was severely affected, and is still recovering from the damage.
Shortly thereafter, in April, the north was affected by Cyclone Kenneth, which killed 45 people and impacted another 250,000.
