Mozambique: Cyclone Dikeledi kills 11 in Nampula province

The National Institute of Meteorology (INAM) on Saturday forecast moderate to heavy rainfall (30 to 50 millimetres by Monday), locally strong (more than 50 millimetres), possibly accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds, in the provinces of Maputo and Gaza.
Most at risk, in Maputo province, are Matutuíne, Boane, Namaacha, Moamba, Marracuene, Manhiça and Magude districts and the cities of Maputo and Matola .
In Gaza province, the alert mainly covers the districts of Guijá, Chókwé, Massingir, Mapai, Mabalane, Chicualacuala, Bilene, Limpopo, Chongoene and the city of Xai-Xai.
INAM recommends taking precautionary and safety measures to counter heavy rain, thunderstorms and gusty winds.
The National Directorate of Water Resources Management (DNGRH) simultaneously warned of possible flooding in Maputo and Matola over the next 48 hours.
The DNGRH highlighted, in Maputo, the 25 de Junho “A”, Lusaka Agreements, Luís Cabral, Chamanculo “B” and “C”, Xipamanine, Aeroporto “A” and “B”, Munhuana, Mafalala, Urbanização, Costa do Sol, Magoanine and Muntanhana neighbourhoods.
In Matola, the DNGRH advised precautionary measures in Machava “A”, Matola Gare, Ndlavela, São Dâmaso, Unidade “D”, Infulene, Singatela, Tsalala, Trevo, Patrice Lumumba, Matola “A”, “ D ”,“ J ”and“ C ”, Fomento, Liberdade and Nkobe.
The DNGRH explained the flood risk as arising from erosion and the possibility of increased water flow volumes in the Maputo, Umbeluzi, Incomati, Limpopo, Búzi and Púnguè river basins.
