Mozambique’s Ministry of Health (MISAU) is interviewing travellers from China on arrival in Mozambique, particularly at Maputo international airport, due to the emergence in that country of a new type of coronavirus, the authorities said on Friday.
“We have reinforced surveillance at all entry points, for example at airports. We conduct interviews to know if the person has travelled to China, who he has been with and what contact he has had, if he has a fever or not. People who have travelled to China are our focus. Not everyone is screened,” Rosa Marlene, the national director of Public Health said.
Mozambican officials said the risk to the country is minimal, with no reason to panic.
On the other hand, the virus does not seem highly transmissible, which is good, added Rosa Marlene.
According to the same source, the virus gains more strength in winter, but Mozambique is in summer, which makes the environment less conducive to the outbreak.
MISAU said there are no restrictions on travel, just more information about the need for travellers to take precautions in terms of contact with sick people.
The new virus, which causes viral pneumonia, was detected in late 2019 and has already caused at least 25 deaths, infecting hundreds of people.
The exact origin of the infection is still unknown, but it will have been animals traded alive that transmit it to humans.
The symptoms of these coronaviruses are more intense than the flu and include fever, pain, general malaise and breathing difficulties, including shortness of breath.
