Three people have been detained and their vessel confiscated on suspicion of involvement in the theft of fuel that resulted in a spill in the bay of Pemba, northern Mozambique, the local maritime administrator said.
Taucali Avelino, quoted on Thursday by daily Notícias, the country’s main daily, said the three men were seen on board a small boat on Friday in the area where the spill is presumed to have happened, at a time when navigation is prohibited in the area.
The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (Mireme) announced on Tuesday in a statement that 5,000 litres of diesel had been spilled, which appeared on the beach in Pemba on the morning of the 31st affecting an area of 3,000 square metres.
Mireme also said that the marine fauna in Pemba Bay had not been contaminated by the spilled fuel, pointing to smuggling as the cause of the incident.
On Sunday, the director of Infrastructure of Cabo Delgado, Norte Uali, told the media that the spillage had happened when unknown people were stealing it from the port of Pemba to unload it on a boat.
The appearance of diesel led the population to remove the liquid for private use, Uali said.
