Mozambican authorities have detained 11 illegal immigrants who were travelling in a car with a police officer in the Moatize district, in Tete, central Mozambique.
The 11 Pakistanis were stopped on Monday night at a checkpoint in Moatize.
The driver of the car in which they were being transported told authorities he was travelling with a friend, a Mozambican police officer, Amelia Direito, spokeswoman for the National Migration Service (SENAMI) in Tete, told Lusa.
“He is a police officer attached to the department of mineral resources and environment. According to the driver, the officer fled” when he realised that the authorities were carrying out an inspection.
Of the total number of immigrants, eight had passports but no visas, and the remaining three had no documents.
The group was from Malawi and was heading to South Africa, the spokeswoman said.
According to SENAMI, inspections have been stepped up in the province to “discourage” the entry of illegal immigrants and the actions of those who facilitate the process.
Less than a month ago, SENAMI arrested 53 illegal immigrants with false documents in the same province who were also heading to South Africa.
Mozambique is a transit point for thousands of migrants who annually cross borders in an attempt to reach South Africa, one of the biggest economies on the African continent.
