Mozambique: Foreign Minister expresses desire to boost economic ties with Angola
Notícias / General Deputy Prosecutor, Taibo Mucobora
The General Deputy Prosecutor, Taibo Mucobora, confirmed yesterday that the attorney general had begun hearings on the public debt last week, but that the process was still at an early stage and would continue over the coming days.
The three companies, whose representatives are being heard by the attorney general, benefited from sovereign guarantees for debts contracted on the international financial markets.
Mucobora, who was speaking at the end of a meeting between Attorney General Beatriz Buchili and EU ambassador, Sven von Burgsdorff, did not reveal the representatives’ names.
Prime Minister Carlos Agostinho do Rosario recently declared that the government was willing to cooperate with the organs of justice and providing all necessary clarifications. Rosario made it clear then that the executive would not interfere with justice system functions in any way.
Speaking to the press at the end of the meeting, EU representative von Burgsdorff said that he was being kept informed of the ongoing hearings.
“We did not talk in detail about the process, but we agree that at this point it is essential to provide information in order to restore the confidence both of Mozambicans and the international community,” von Burgsdorff added.
Von Burgsdorff said he had talked to the attorney general about the support that the EU could provide to help fight corruption.
“We have an ongoing project with the attorney general, and spoke of the challenges the institution faces promoting the rule of law in Mozambique, from financial resources, equipment and the need for the Criminal Investigation Police to be more autonomous in their actions,” Burgsdorff said.
