The Attorney General of Mozambique, Américo Letela, today demanded that magistrates be intolerant of crime, and that all corruption cases be “duly investigated”, without any external interference.
“Those sworn in have a clear mission to ensure that corruption cases are duly investigated and prosecuted, without any external influence or personal interest,” said Américo Letela in Maputo during the inauguration of Public Prosecutor’s Office staff, including new members of the Anti-Corruption Office.
The attorney general wants those sworn in to strengthen the culture of transparency, accountability and public responsibility, aiming to create an environment in which “corruption has no room to thrive” in Mozambique.
Américo Letela hopes that, in their new roles, the magistrates will promote activities to prevent and combat corruption, money laundering and “complex, transnational crime, including terrorism”.
“The fight against corruption must begin within ourselves, because it would not be fair to demand purity from others, when in fact we are not pure (…). We cannot be lenient or tolerant of acts of corruption,” the attorney general concluded.
At today’s ceremony, Amélia Machava was sworn in as director of the Central Office for Combating Organized and Transnational Crime, Nazimo Mussá as deputy director of the Central Office for Combating Corruption, and Fernando Uache as head provincial public prosecutor of Manica.
Atija Cassimo was also sworn in as head provincial public prosecutor of Inhambane and Luís Vianeque as director of the Provincial Office for Combating Corruption of Tete.
