Mozambican authorities on Tuesday captured a foreigner who tried to infiltrate government forces during morning exercises, a Defence and Security Forces spokesman said.
“The work we carried out shows that the individual intended reconnoitring our latest positions,” said Freitas Norte, without advancing the man’s nationality.
According to Televisão de Moçambique, Norte said that, in addition to infiltrating the FDS, the strategy of the insurgent groups carrying out armed attacks in Cabo Delgado also involves the publication of fake advertisements for jobs in the region.
The Defence and Security Forces were endeavouring to “identify other individuals who are involved in information gathering”, Norte added.
Armed violence in Cabo Delgado began three years ago and is causing a humanitarian crisis with more than 2,000 deaths and 560,000 people displaced, without adequate housing or food, mainly to the provincial capital, Pemba.
Some of the incursions have, since 2019, been claimed by the ‘jihadist’ Islamic State group.
The Southern African Development Community will meet this month to discuss the security situation in the region.
