A group of athletes has been to the Sports Secretariat to demand payment of the prizes for winning medals in international competitions in various categories. The state is thought to owe 14 million meticais [around US$21,9202 at current exchange rates], but has made no payments for seven years.
The athletes have been waiting this long since winning gold, silver or bronze medals in international competitions wearing the national colours. Regulations lay down they are entitled to receive a bonus from the state, which has never happened.
“Since 2017, there has been a group that has not yet received their awards and, since then, it has accumulated. There have never been any sports awards. The athletes are, in certain way, worn out,” says volleyball player Délcio Soares.
Soares states that the athletes have tried to approach the State Secretariat for Sports several times in the intervening years to clarify the situation.
“We have been doing this for two years. The SED advised us to write a letter to the Sports Promotion Fund, but so far we have not yet received a plausible response,” explains Soares, a response corroborated by Aldevino Nuvunga.
