Mozambique’s Deputy Minister of Culture and Tourism, Fredson Bacar, is representing the Government of the Republic of Mozambique in the celebrations of the forty-fifth anniversary of solidarity in international education, an initiative set up by Commander Fidel Castro for nations friendly to Cuba.
The Mozambican delegation is made up of 13 Mozambicans who profited for scholarships to Cuba.
The celebrations began on the 10th of October, attended by representatives from ten countries which sent students to Isla de La Juventud, a total of 53 ex-scholarship holders from Mozambique, Angola, Guinea Bissau, Congo, Ethiopia, Cape Verde, Zimbabwe, Burkina Faso, North Korea and Nicaragua.
The opening of the celebrations featured a photographic exhibition of former students, in addition to some of the material produced during their learning process. Certificates were also awarded to dignitaries and directors, teachers and former students who participated in the festivities.
Former students were given a tour of the schools where they studied, in the company of teachers and other representatives of the Cuban education system.
The day ended with a visit to the ‘La Fe’ neighbourhood, with a warm welcome from the residents, who presented a variety of cultural performances. There was much enthusiasm and emotion at reunions between the former Mozambicans students and their Cuban teachers.
The celebrations continue until the 13th of October and will include the participation of His Excellency Eliseu Machava, the Ambassador of Mozambique in Cuba.
Mozambique was the first country to benefit from scholarships on the Island of Youth in the Republic of Cuba, providing the first 551 pupils in 1977.
Deputy Minister Bacar’s visit to Cuba aims to assess and boost cooperation between the two countries in the areas of culture and tourism through meetings with stakeholders and visits to places of cultural and tourist interest.
