At least three people have died and two others are missing following a shipwreck that took place on Thursday on the Colovane river, in Dondo district, in the central Mozambican province of Sofala.
According to Fernando Faria, spokesperson for the Fire Brigade in Sofala, the victims are students from the Institute of Marine Sciences and Fisheries, who were attending practical classes along the Colovane river.
The causes of the shipwreck are so far unknown, but Faria pointed to the flimsy nature of the boat the students were using.
“There were six people on board the canoe, one of whom was rescued”, he said “The students’ boat was not safe. They were traveling inside a homemade boat, which did not offer any security.”
Faria guaranteed that the authorities are in the field looking for the missing bodies, “we are talking about two bodies that are still missing”, he said.
