At least seven people were killed and several homes were burnt down during attacks by suspected terrorist groups in the communities of Tadavala, Macomia, and Nova Família, Muidumbe, in the Mozambican province of Cabo Delgado, according to an official source.
According to the source, the terrorist attacks on Friday in the two communities on the banks of the Messalo River, more than 100 kilometres from Muidumbe and Macomia, happened simultaneously, after the rebels raided the homes in broad daylight.
“The rebels continue to kill. Several houses were burnt down,” the source said , speaking from Muidumbe, reporting that the attack forced residents to flee.
“Many have lost their homes,” the source said.
In another attack on Monday, terrorist groups killed at least two people in the town of Mapate, around 60 kilometres from Muidumbe, forcing residents to flee.
Cabo Delgado province, in the north of the country, which is rich in gas, has been facing an armed rebellion since 2017, which has caused thousands of deaths and a humanitarian crisis, with more than a million people displaced since then.
At least 29 people died and another 208,000 were affected in July by attacks by extremist groups in districts of Cabo Delgado, a Mozambican province that has been facing armed insurgency since 2017, a UN agency said on Friday.
