At least 63 people have died, with 80 injured, and another 112,646 have been affected by the current rainy season in Mozambique, which began in October 2020, according to a new assessment by the authorities.
The 2020/2021 rainy season, marked by a tropical storm that hit central Mozambique last week [Chalane], has already partially destroyed 23,116 homes and totally devastated another 14,938 across the country, said Xavier Gulele, a technician at the emergency operational centre (CENOE).
According to the source, between October 1 and January 6 of this year, the rainy season also destroyed 1,115 classrooms and affected 124,700 pupils.
In October, the government approved the contingency plan for the 2020/2021 rainy season, a strategy budgeted at a total of 7.2 billion meticais (78 million euros, at the current exchange rate).
The 78 million euros needed for the plan will be used to assist about 1.6 million people who could be affected by the calamities during this rainy and cyclone season.
The 2018/2019 rainy season was one of the most severe in Mozambique: 714 people died, including 648 victims of two cyclones (Idai and Kenneth) that hit Mozambique.
Between October and April, Mozambique is cyclically hit by cyclonic winds from the Indian Ocean and floods from southern African watersheds, as well as droughts that almost always affect some parts of the south of the country.
