At least 129 people died and another 44 were reported missing in Mozambique in 2022 [173 in total] as a result of accidents at sea and on rivers, an official source announced on Friday.
The deaths, from a total of 172 incidents, included drowning, vessel accidents and attacks by animals, National Marine Institute (INAMAR) spokesman Leonild Chimarizene told a press conference in Maputo.
INAMAR highlights overcrowding on vessels, ignoring weather reports and lack of inspectors as some of the causes of the incidents.
“There are situations in which information about bad weather is released and people head out to sea anyway,” spokesman Chimarizene lamented, adding that the authorities were “redoubling efforts to reduce the number of maritime accidents”.
Leonild Chimarizene said that pamphlets and posters were being produced to raise awareness among bathers and others who go to rivers for various purposes, warning them of the need for caution, in addition to training personnel and positioning them in areas of risk.
