At least 16 people were shot this Wednesday morning among supporters accompanying a march led by former presidential candidate Venâncio Mondlane in Mozambique’s capital, Maputo, the Decide Platform said.
Among those shot were two children and a member of Venâncio Mondlane’s caravan, Wilker Dias, director of Plataforma Decide, a non-governmental organisation (NGO) that monitors electoral processes, told Lusa.
The incident happened at around 1pm ( two hours less in Lisbon) in the Hulene neighbourhood, along Avenida Julius Nyerere, when the caravan accompanying Venâncio Mondlane was heading towards Praça dos Combatentes from Praça da Juventude, in the Magoanine neighbourhood, in the suburbs of Maputo.
Mozambique has been experiencing a climate of intense social unrest since October, with demonstrations and stoppages called by former presidential candidate Venâncio Mondlane, who rejects the election results of 9 October, which gave victory to Daniel Chapo.
The NGO counts 63 people shot since 15 January, bringing to 3,516 the number of people injured in the clashes with police forces that began in October.
The Mozambican police have positioned themselves on all the main roads and avenues leading to the Joaquim Chissano Conference Centre, where the political agreement between the Mozambican president and party groupings, focused on state reforms, was signed today as part of the political dialogue to end the country’s post-election crisis.
Protests, now on a small scale, have been taking place in different parts of the country and, as well as contesting the election results, the people are complaining about the rising cost of living and other social problems.
Since October, at least 353 people have died, including around two dozen minors, according to the Decide Platform.
The Mozambican government has confirmed at least 80 deaths, as well as the destruction of 1,677 commercial establishments, 177 schools and 23 health centres during the demonstrations.
