The Mozambican parliament, the Assembly of the Republic, on Thursday unanimously elected its two deputy chairpersons.
The first deputy chairperson is Helder Injojo, of the ruling Frelimo Party, while the second deputy chairperson is Saide Fidel, of the main opposition party, Renamo.
The Assembly also elected its governing board, the Standing Commission. In addition to the chairperson (speaker), Esperanca Bias, and her two deputies, the leaders of the three parliamentary groups all sit on the Commission. They are Sergio Pantie of Frelimo, Viana Magalhaes of Renamo and Lutero Simango of the Mozambique Democratic Movement (MDM).
There are eleven other members of the Standing Commission, eight from Frelimo and three from Renamo. Places on the commission are allocated in proportion to the number of seats each party holds. With only six deputies, the MDM is not entitled to a seat on the Commission, apart from the one held by Simango.
The Assembly also elected the six members of its Council of Administration, and here the rules were bent slightly to allow the MDM to take one place on the Council, while four went to Frelimo and one to Renamo.
These elections in the Assembly plenary were all unanimous.
On Friday the Assembly will elect its nine working commissions. It is already known that seven of these will be chaired by Frelimo and two by Renamo.
