Fourteen works by Mozambican visual artists from the Millennium Bim art collection are currently being exhibited at the Franco-Mozambican Cultural Centre.
“We have had several works with us since we started banking, around 29 years ago,” said Moisés Jorge, CEO of Millennium Bim, regarding the start of the bank’s art collection.
“It was at this time that we made this decision to share the works we have with the community, to present the works to the community, valuing the artists, who, naturally, seek every day to put their ideas into practice, which they truly share with society,” Jorge explained.
There are 14 works by 11 artists, most of whom are now deceased. This is the way Bim pays tribute to them, according to Jorge.
“This also represents a tribute that we pay to Dr. Mário Machungo, who was the driving force behind the acquisition of these works, and to Engineer Fonseca. These were two men who, throughout all these years, not only invested in art, but also made sure that, at some point, we could share these works with society,” he explained.
The exhibition, curated by Jorge Dias, shows works from the 1960s or shortly before which convey the construction of new cultural values during the transition from European to African modernism.
At the opening of the exhibition on Thursday, not only the public was present, but also those who picked up their paintbrushes to portray their thoughts and feelings. Those whose works represent their passage through the world of the living had family members there to represent them.
“My father always tried to convey a message of love in everything he did,” said Laisse Mulungo, daughter of Samate Mulungo.
The exhibition runs until the end of the month.
