A Mozambican and a Zimbabwean have been arrested in Chimoio, Manica province, accused of trying to sell a four-year-old child, the Mozambican’s stepson.
The detainees are both 22 years old, and both residents of the 25 de Setembro neighbourhood in Chimoio. They intended to sell the child for 80,000 meticais to an undisclosed individual in Manica district.
The traffickers did not reveal the name of the potential buyer, but admitted that they were preparing to kidnap the minor to sell him somewhere in Manica. With the money, they intended to improve their life, having been expropriated of a plot of land in the same district where they used previously to mine.
Manica PRM spokesman Mateus Mindu said that the traffickers fell into the hands of the authorities after complaints from the public, who became aware of the plot and chose to notify the police.
