A story circulating on the Internet claiming that the former general commander of the Mozambican police force (PRM), Bernadino Rafael, has been placed under arrest, and is in the custody of Interpol, is untrue, according to the fact-checking service of the regional press freedom body, MISA (Media Institute of Southern Africa).
The story, shared across social media, particularly Facebook, was that Rafael had been detained on charges of the attempted assassination of former presidential candidate Venancio Mondlane.
But when MISA contacted the PRM, it categorically denied the story. The head of public relations in the PRM Command, Leonel Muchina, said “these stories are a complete invention. People are trying to damage the good name and reputation of Commander Bernadino Rafael. And nobody has tried to murder former presidential candidate Venancio Mondlane”.
MISA also contacted the Interpol press office which said that Interpol does not undertake arrests directly. Instead, “any detention must be undertaken by the national police of the country in question, in line with the national legislation”.
The spokesperson added that the main task of Interpol is to facilitate cooperation between police forces, by sharing information about crimes and suspects between the member countries.
