About 600 students at Nampula Secondary School, the largest establishment of its type in the province, still sit on the floor during class, due to a lack of desks.
The institution says it needs more than 650 desks for eight classrooms to address the problem.
Meanwhile, around 300 damaged desks are stored on the school’s premises for lack of funds to repair them, school director Albertino Luís told ‘Notícias’.
“We do not have the financial capacity to mend these desks We approached institutions such as the Industrial Institute and the Military Academy, who told us that they could send students to repair the desks as a practical class, but the purchase of the material must be undertaken by us, and we are unable to do this,” Luis said.
The lack of furniture at school may also be related to robberies. Taken advantage of weaknesses in the perimeter fence, people from outside the establishment enter the school premises outside of opening hours to steal desks and other goods.
