Around 3,000 bodies were buried in mass graves in Maputo in 2023 because they had not been claimed within the statutory 30-day period, according to a municipality statement released on Wednesday.
The information was provided by Maputo City Health Councillor, Alice Abreu, who visited the morgue at Maputo Central Hospital (HCM) on Wednesday, following reports of malfunction and inoperability there.
Quoted by the local press, Abreu acknowledged that the failure to claim bodies after a legally established period of time was limiting space at the morgue, and had forced the Municipality to undertake mass burials, at a cost of two million meticais (€28,600).
The municipality is preparing to expand the HCM morgue, at a cost of eight million meticais (€115,000), Abreu said.
