One person was killed and another was injured in a robbery at a Banco Comercial e de Investimentos (BCI) branch in Bairro do Fomento, Matola, in Maputo province, the Mozambican police announced on Friday.
The victims were a security guard, fatally shot just outside the bank branch, and an employee who was injured after several shots were fired by a group of nine armed men, some of whom were carrying AK47s, police spokesman Rodrigues Tchambana explained to the public broadcaster.
The robbery took place in broad daylight on Thursday, when security guards from a private company collecting a sum of cash from the branch for transport in an armoured vehicle were caught off-guard hand by a volley of shots.
In total, the group seized around 17 million meticais (€241,000 euros) that were being withdrawn from the BCI branch, which is mainly owned by Caixa Geral de Depósitos.
Video from the surveillance system at the site, which houses several commercial establishments, shows the moment the group opened fire, fatally injuring the security guard and causing several people to flee, including a police officer on duty.
“We are following our operational lines and I believe that, very soon, we will have the case clarified,” Tchambana said.
This crime occurs almost two months after another armed group robbed a vehicle belonging to the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God which was transporting money in the centre of the Mozambican capital, seizing six million meticais (€86,000).
