Five people were wounded, one seriously, in an armed attack on vehicles travelling on National Road Number 1 yesterday, O País reports.
In the last two weeks, armed men allegedly belonging to the self-proclaimed Renamo Military Junta launched attacks in Manica’s Sussundenga district, causing two deaths and wounding several more.
Yesterday, they returned to creating terror on the EN1, between Muxúnguè and Mutindir in Sofala province.
According to survivors, it was shortly after 8:00 a.m. when passenger, freight and private vehicles escorted by the Defence and Security Forces on the stretch of road between Muxúnguè and Inchope were ambushed by armed men, who opened fire, wounding five.
‘O Pais’ spoke to Daniel Cossa, who was shot in the thigh during the attack and was receiving treatment in Chimoio Provincial Hospital.
“We were coming from Maputo and arrived in Muxúnguè yesterday (Monday). It was late, and we had to wait for a convoy, because the last convoy had already left. Thirty minutes after we left, in an escorted convoy, we were attacked and I was shot in this part of the thigh. The bullet is still lodged in my body,” Cossa said, writhing in pain.
Juvenal Chitovele, an orthopaedics doctor at Chimoio Hospital, said that Daniel Cossa was in a serious condition but not in danger of his life.
