Areas in the southern Mozambican provinces of Gaza and Inhambane in southern Mozambique are facing food shortages, according to the Famine Early Warning System Network (FEWS Net).
According to the report, following below-average crop yields and crop failure the results of the crisis are already visible in the semi-arid areas of Gaza and Inhambane, requiring urgent food assistance.
The network places those zones of Mozambique at level three (crisis) of the food security assessment scale, ranging from one (minimum risk) to five (famine).
Most of the country’s population practices subsistence farming, harvesting the products with which they feed their families from their own plots.
Food security is expected to deteriorate and spread to other areas in southern and central Mozambique, especially Tete, by January 2019, the report added.
However, in the North and in some central areas, the minimum risk should prevail due to favourable conditions, food availability and access, it concluded.
