The strike started this Wednesday morning across all divisions of Águas da Região do Sul (Ara-Sul). Workers say they are angry and complain about accumulated problems that the management has known about for years. “At Ara-Sul, there is no career progression, seniority bonus or salary scale,” Ara-Sul Workers Union representative Sandra Pene told ‘O País’.
Joana Chicuane has worked at Ara-Sul since 1991. According to her, she is going to retire later this year, but has not seen her professional category changed over more than 30 years’ service.
“I simply regret the fact that I have to go into retirement without having had any progression. We had several bosses, some of whom retired, but they continue to say that they are dealing with the matter, but, until today, they have not given any response,” she told O País.
According to a document issued by the Ara-Sul Workers’ Union, most of the institution’s workers were hired in 1980, but all remain in the same category and under the same salary conditions.
“We entered into negotiations several times, but we didn’t reach any agreement, because the management says that it has already elaborated the salary table proposal and that the process is now in the Ministry of Finance,” a union representative explained.
The Board of Ara-Sul says that it is aware of the problem, adding that more than 50% of the workers have already had their situation resolved.
“It seems that the workers were impatient, because we solved part of it, but not completely. But at an opportune moment, we will have the right solutions,” head of Human Resources at Ara-Sulv Carlos Muxanga said.
The workers however are unplacated and have gone on strike indefinitely.
