As the peak of the rainy season nears, ARA-Centro, the regional water administration body for the centre of the country, has called for the immediate evacuation of riverside areas in the provinces of Tete, Manica, Sofala and Zambézia, due to the possibility of floods.
The districts concerned are Doa and Mutarara in Tete province, Chemba, Caia and Marromeu in Sofala province, Mopeia and Morrumbala in Zambézia and Tambara in Manica.
The head of the Water Resources Department at ARA-Centro, Francisco Macaríngue, said that, despite weather forecasts indicating low rainfall due to the El Niño phenomenon, people should remove their goods from areas prone to ‘natural calamities’.
The El Niño climate phenomenon involves atmospheric and oceanic factors, characterized by an increase in temperatures in the Pacific Ocean, and affecting mainly the tropical zone of the globe. El Niño generates changes in temperature and precipitation patterns, causing severe droughts as well as torrential rains.
