The Mozambican health authorities on Saturday (August 8) announced that another person suffering from the Covid-19 respiratory disease has died, bringing the death toll in the Mozambican epidemic to 16. [Full MISAU daily Brief, in Portuguese, HERE]
According to a press release from the Ministry of Health, the latest victim was a 42 year old Mozambican woman who was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit in Maputo Central Hospital on 12 July.
On 13 July, she was diagnosed with the coronavirus that causes Covid-19, but she was also suffering from other, unspecified serious illnesses. Three days later she was transferred to the isolation ward in the Polana Canico hospital. In the following weeks, her clinical condition did not improve, and she died at 10.30 on Saturday morning.
The number of people tested for the coronavirus since the start of the pandemic is now 67,403, 861 of them in the previous 24 hours, the Ministry release said. All these tests were held in public facilities.
Of these samples, 176 were from Inhambane, 153 from Maputo City, 145 from Sofala, 100 from Cabo Delgado, 95 from Tete, 79 from Nampula, 75 from Zambezia, 13 from Maputo province, ten from Niassa, eight from Gaza and seven from Manica.
833 of the tests proved negative, and 28 people tested positive for the coronavirus, bringing the total number diagnosed since the start of the pandemic to 2,241. All of the new cases are Mozambican citizens, 16 of them men and 12 women.
13 of the cases are from Maputo city and four are from Maputo province (two in Matola city and two in Manhica district). . Eight are from Cabo Delgado (seven from the provincial capital, Pemba and one from Mueda). Two are from Sofala (one from Beira city, and one from Cheringoma. One case is from Nampula city.
In line with standard Ministry of Health procedure, all 28 new cases are in home isolation, and their contacts are being traced.
Also in the previous 24 hours, five Covid-19 patients made a complete recovery from the disease. The total number of recoveries now stands at 832 (37.13 per cent of all positive cases).
As of Saturday, the geographical breakdown of the 2,241 positive cases, by the provinces where they were diagnosed, was as follows: Maputo City, 525; Cabo Delgado, 514; Nampula, 446; Maputo province, 404; Sofala, 75; Gaza, 74; Tete, 58; Inhambane, 50; Zambezia, 47; Niassa, 30; Manica, 18.
The key Covid-19 statistics for Mozambique were by Saturday (August 8): confirmed cases – 2,241, of whom 828 have made a full recovery and 1,391 are active cases. 18 Covid-19 patients have died, 16 from the disease itself, and two from other pathologies.
