Mozambique: Health workers announce second phase of strike

The Mozambican health authorities on Saturday announced another death from the Covid-19 respiratory disease, and a further 95 confirmed cases of the disease.
According to a Ministry of Health press release, the latest victim was a 53 year old Mozambican woman hospitalised in Maputo city. She tested positive for the coronavirus that causes Covid-19 on Tuesday. Her condition did not improve and she died on Friday. This brings the number of confirmed Covid-19 deaths in Mozambique to 74.
The Ministry release said that to date 165,671 people have been tested for the coronavirus, 1,310 of them in the previous 24 hours.
All the tests were administered in public facilities. Of the samples tested, 610 were from Maputo city, 251 from Maputo province, 114 from Sofala, 87 from Cabo Delgado, 75 from Nampula, 59 from Gaza, 56 from Zambezia, 20 from Tete, 19 from Inhambane, 10 from Niassa and nine from Manica.
1,215 of the tests gave negative results, and 95 people tested positive for the coronavirus. This brings the number of positive cases since the start of the pandemic to 10,707.
All the new cases are Mozambican citizens. 52 are men or boys and 43 are women or girls. Seven are children under the age of 15, and two are over 65 years old. No age information was available for five cases.
There were 54 cases from Maputo city and 37 from Maputo province. Thus Maputo city and province accounted for 96 per cent of the new cases. There were also three cases from Niassa and one from Tete.
In line with standard Health Ministry procedure, all 95 new cases are in home isolation and their contacts are being traced.
The Ministry also announced that, in the previous 24 hours, four Covid-19 patients were discharged from hospital, but seven new patients were admitted, all in Maputo city. Currently 40 people are under medical care in the Covid-19 isolation wards, 39 in Maputo and one in Nampula.
The Ministry added that, in the same period, ten people have made a full recovery from Covid-19. This brings the number of recoveries to 8,272 (77.3 per cent of all people diagnosed with the pandemic).
There are now 2,357 active cases of Covid-19 in Mozambique. They are distributed geographically as follows: Maputo city, 1,490; Maputo province, 520; Sofala, 98; Niassa, 75; Cabo Delgado 44, Tete, 43; Nampula, 35; Gaza, 28; Manica, 10; Inhambane, seven; Zambezia, seven. Between them, Maputo city and province account for 85.3 per cent of all currently active cases.
