The Mozambican health authorities on Saturday (September 26) reported one more death from the Covid-19 respiratory disease and a further 168 cases.
According to a press release from the Ministry of Health, the latest victim was a 53 year old Mozambican woman, who tested positive for the coronavirus that causes Covid-19 on 21 September in a Maputo hospital. Her condition continued to deteriorate and she was declared dead on Friday. This brings the Mozambican death toll from Covid-19 to 54.
The release announced that, since the start of the pandemic, 132,979 people have been tested for the coronavirus, 1,400 of them in the previous 24 hours. All these tests were undertaken in public facilities.
Of the samples tested, 501 were from Zambezia, 188 from Maputo city, 151 from Maputo province, 113 from Tete, 110 from Sofala, 106 from Niassa, 93 from Manica, 67 from Nampula, 30 from Inhambane, 21 from Cabo Delgado and 20 from Gaza.
1,232 of the samples were negative, and 168 people tested positive for the coronavirus. This brings the total number of positive cases to 7,757. All of the new cases are Mozambican citizens, eight of whom had arrived in the country recently from South Africa. 87 are men or boys and 81 are women or girls. 20 are children under the age of 15, and five are more than 65 years old. In eight cases, no age information was available.
82 of the new cases are from Maputo city and 36 are from Maputo province. Thus between them the city and the province accounted for over 70 per cent of the cases. There were also 17 cases from Zambezia, 14 from Inhambane, seven from Tete, four from Gaza, three from Sofala, two from Manica, two from Niassa and one from Cabo Delgado.
In line with standard Health Ministry procedure, all 168 cases are now in home isolation, and their contacts are being traced.
The Ministry said that, in the same 24 hour period, nine Covid-19 patients were discharged from hospital, all of them in Maputo city. But eight others were admitted to hospital (seven in Maputo and one in Nampula). There are now 52 patients under medical care in isolation wards (50 in Maputo, one in Nampula and one in Zambezia).
The release also announced that a further 120 people have made a complete recovery from Covid-19 (57 in Zambezia, 41 in Maputo city and 22 in Maputo province). This brings the total number of recoveries to 4,769 – 61.5 per cent of all positive cases diagnosed.
As of Saturday, the geographical breakdown of the 7.757 positive cases, by the province where they were diagnosed, was as follows: Maputo city, 3,387; Maputo province, 1,377; Cabo Delgado, 698; Nampula, 581; Zambezia, 403; Gaza, 317; Tete, 264; Inhambane, 216; Sofala, 214; Niassa, 193; Manica, 107.
Thus, the basic Covid-19 statistics for Mozambique, by Saturday (September 26] stood at: 7,757 confirmed case, of whom 4,769 have made a full recovery and 2,930 are active cases. 58 Covid-19 patients have died, 54 from the disease and four from other causes.
