The Mozambican Police on Sunday announced the arrest of one of the criminals involved in the kidnapping, on Saturday, of 56 year old businessman Bharat Kumar, inside his bottle store in downtown Maputo.
The Maputo city police spokesperson, Leonel Muchina, said that the suspect was arrested near the crime scene, a few hours after the crime, thanks to the images recorded by the CCTV surveillance video cameras, installed in the facilities.

On the security video footage, the suspect could be seen inside the shop wearing a blue shirt and talking on his phone, while the two others armed with a gun carried out the crime. But a few minutes before the kidnap the suspect left, returning shortly after the crime had been committed.
“The police launched a manhunt that led to the arrest of one of the gang members, tasked with the reconnaissance of the area, supplying every detail about the shopkeeper’s routine to enable his kidnap,” Muchina said, adding that after the crime the suspect returned to his job.
From this arrest, Muchina hopes that the police will gather the necessary clues which might lead to the whereabouts of the other criminals involved.
The gang clearly thought they enjoyed impunity, since Kumar’s bottle store is just a stone’s throw from the city’s first police precinct, and on Saturday afternoon the area is extremely busy.
The kidnapping of Kumar follows an incident last Monday when criminals kidnapped a Turkish businessman, on Orlando Magumbwe Avenue, in central Maputo.
These two kidnappings follow an apparent lull in the number of cases recorded across the country, especially in Maputo, where businessmen, particularly those of Asian origin, have usually been the preferred targets.
