It was after 7:00 a.m. last Saturday morning when a convoy of (mostly) trucks travelling from the north of the country was attacked by armed men in the Zove region, 30 kilometres from the headquarters of the Administrative Post of Muxúnguè, Chibabava district, Sofala province.
According to what ‘Carta de Mozambique’ has learned, the attack resulted in the death of one person, hit by two bullets and declared dead at the Muxúnguè Health Centre, to where he was transferred. There are also reports of major material damage.
Sources say that the vehicles were not escorted, allegedly because the Defence and Security Forces (FDS) in the vicinity had no fuel. In fact, sources say that all vehicles crossing the region on Saturday were unescorted, for the same reason.
The attack, the first in 2021, is attributed to the self-proclaimed Renamo Military Junta, led by Mariano Nhongo, who at the end of last year announced a truce to facilitate the start of dialogue with head of state Filipe Jacinto Nyusi.
Special Envoy of the Secretary-General of the United Nations and Chairman of the Contact Group, Mirko Manzoni, said a few days ago that an environment favourable for the beginning of talks between the government and the self-proclaimed Renamo Military Junta now existed.
In the last few days, the FDS have been pursuing members of the self-proclaimed Renamo Military Junta, and have attacked the armed group’s bases.
