The average level of prices in Mozambique’s urban areas rose by 1.6 per cent in December, according to the latest figures published by the National Statistics Institute (INE).
This brought the annual rate of inflation in 2024 to 4.15 per cent.
Of the cities monitored by the INE, the highest inflation in 2024 was in Quelimane, with 4.98 per cent, followed by Xai-Xai (4.42 per cent), Beira (4.33 per cent), and Nampula (4.32 per cent). The annual inflation rate in Maputo was only 3.85 per cent.
According to the Bank of Mozambique, the annual inflation rate rose to 4.69 per cent in January.
Among the goods with the most significant price rises in December were tomatoes (21.4 per cent), fresh fish (5.8 per cent), wheat bread (five per cent), cooking oil (4.2 per cent), and dried fish (3.4 per cent).
In some cases, prices declined over the month, notably for lemons (down by 8.4 per cent) and children’s shoes (0.7 per cent).
The December and January inflation rates are considerably higher than the rates of 2.84 per cent registered in November, 2.86 per cent in October and 2.45 per cent in September.
