Mozambique faces an annual deficit of 37 billion meticais (€507.4 million) in funding for road construction and maintenance, according to government data released on Thursday.
“Of the annual intervention required to ensure a road network in good and safe condition, [funding] of 53 billion meticais (€726.7 million) is estimated. However, the average resources allocated to the road sector have been around 16 billion meticais (€82.2 million),” said the Secretary of State for Transport.
Chinguane Mabote was speaking on the sidelines of the annual meeting to evaluate the Integrated Road Sector Programme in Maputo.
He argued that, for the “rational” use of “limited” financial resources, it is necessary to prioritise the development of knowledge and institutional strengthening in the transport area “to ensure a better balance between project results and the amount of money invested”.
The Secretary of Transport also explained that the resources made available annually cover only about 30% of the sector’s needs.
Mozambique has a road network of 30,464 kilometres, but only 7,344 kilometres (about 25%) are paved.
