Mozambique announces five priority destinations for investments in the tourism sector

The Minister of Culture and Tourism of Mozambique, Silva Dunduro, said at the closing of the International Conference on Nature-based Tourism that the government had chosen five priority destinations for investment in Mozambican tourism.
According to Dunduro, the main destinations for investments are Maputo (Maputo city, Maputo Special Reserve and Ponta de Ouro), Vilanculos (Bazaruto and Inhassoro archipelago), Gorongosa (Gorongosa National Park, Marromeu Reserve, Chimanimani National Reserve, Cabeça do Velho and Savana), Quirimbas (Pemba Bay, Quissanga district, Macomia district, Palma district, Mocímboa da Praia district and Ibo Island) and finally Niassa (Lichinga, Metangula and Niassa National Reserve).
According to O País, the minister said that in 2017 tourism revenues were US$150 million but added it was possible to reach a target of US$2.8 billion in external tourism revenues and the equivalent of US$4 billion in domestic tourism revenues.
Dunduro also said that a new tourism plan is expected to create 83,000 direct jobs and 242,000 total jobs in tourism.
Currently the tourism sector in Mozambique accounts for 3% of gross domestic product (GDP) and employs more than 63,000 people.
