President Filipe Nyusi of Mozambique has vowed to his compatriots that the country will by 2030 eradicate tuberculosis, an ancient disease that killed 1.8 million globally last year alone. Nyusi made the vow in New York on Thursday during the 74th session of the United Nations General Assembly.
“We are here to face and reiterate the commitment of the Mozambican government that will continue to mobilise all Mozambicans to work with the World Health Organisation and other partners to increase our intervention in the fight against the disease believing that it is possible to eliminate tuberculosis until 2030” he said.

Mozambique is struggling to eradicate its second top killer after HIV and AIDS, and activists say more focus is needed on poor communities as drug resistant strains of the disease take hold and wreak havoc on their members.
With 80 percent of the country’s young adults already infected with TB, health experts say there is no time to waste.
