The platform of Angolan non-governmental organisations, the Human Rights Monitoring Working Group (GTMDH), on Thursday called on the outgoing president of Mozambique to protect Venâncio Mondlane and for a ‘truly inclusive dialogue’ to overcome the post-election crisis.
In a letter sent to Filipe Nyusi, the GTMDH expressed its ‘concern’ about the current situation in Mozambique and asked Mozambique’s government to protect the politician and presidential candidate Venâncio Mondlane, who is contesting the results that claim he was defeated and who returned to the country on Thursday after two and a half months away.
The Angolan NGO platform also called for all conditions to be created for a ‘truly inclusive dialogue’ to help overcome the political crisis facing the country.
Venâncio Mondlane arrived in Maputo today after two and a half months out of the country, then headed to the centre of the Mozambican capital with his entourage surrounded by thousands of people.
Speaking to journalists at the airport, Mondlane accused the Mozambican authorities of ‘a kind of silent genocide’ in their repression of the contestation of the general elections’ results on 9 October but expressed his willingness to engage in dialogue and negotiate.
The candidate justified his return by the fact that he couldn’t remain outside the country when the people ‘are being massacred’.
Clashes between police and protesters have left almost 300 people dead and more than 500 shot since October 21, according to civil society organisations monitoring the process.
On 23 December, the Constitutional Council, the final court of appeal in electoral disputes, proclaimed Daniel Chapo, the candidate supported by the ruling Front for the Liberation of Mozambique (Frelimo), as the winner of the presidential election, with 65.17% of the votes, as well as the victory of Frelimo, which retained its parliamentary majority.
