Mozambique and Zambia are going to standardize road freight transport rates between the two countries with a view to creating a level playing field for carriers, it was announced on Wednesday at the end of a bilateral ministerial meeting in Beira, Sofala province.
The measure responds to complaints from cargo transporters highlighting constraints resulting from the disparity in fees charged in the countries of the region, and in customs clearance.
Zambian Transport and Communications Minister Mutotwe Kafwaya said he hoped the meeting would mark the beginning of a new stage in the area of freight and logistics.
In turn, the Mozambican minister of Transport and Communications, Janfar Abdulai, said that a number of measures were being undertaken to facilitate the circulation of goods, especially in the Beira Corridor.
