Mozambique and Zambia have agreed to build a new 1.200-megawatt coal-fired power plant in Tete province under one of two memoranda of understanding signed yesterday at the end of talks between visiting Zambian president Edgar Lungu and Filipe Nyusi.
Mozambique’s Foreign Minsiter Oldemiro Baloi says the new power plant will supply power to other countries in the region besides the two signatories.
Although investors have not yet been done identified and no date set for the start of construction, Baloi, who signed both memoranda on behalf of the Mozambican government, said the development would serve as a link between Zambia and Mozambique.
“This is cutting edge technology that will generate energy that can be sold at a profit of US$12 million a year for our country,” Baloi said.
